What is unique about this school?
Project-Based Learning model with a College-Bound Focus - Katherine Smith Elementary has changed dramatically over the past few years. This struggling school changed their focus to a Project-Based Learning curriculum. Each teacher there voluntarily chose to commit to the new learning model. The school is part of the No Excuses University program and each class adopts a college to promote in their classroom. The focus is on preparing students to enter college.

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy:
Katherine Smith Elementary has engaged their community of parents in the schools new Project-Based Learning model and college focus. Parents make suggestions, visit school exhibits, and frequently interact with school staff. The increased involvement of parents in the community has resulted in more highly engaged students.
Technology has been invested in and is present in every classroom. Students are provided the resources they need to become digitally literate.
Promotion of Creativity in the Classroom for Students and Teachers:
Students have a higher level of creative involvement in Project-Based Learning as they apply skills they learn in school to real world problems and challenges. Teachers are united by their common commitment to college-bound students and collaborate freely with each other.
