What is unique about this school?

Literacy Blocks - Students spend 30 minutes each morning in literacy groups. Students who need to help are assessed for intervention and spend their time in groups that lift their literacy skills by one or more levels. Other students take part in the literacy group that interests them, including options such as Nutrition, Global, Economic, and Art Literacy. Students are challenged to participate in a forty book challenge, and they can choose the books that interest them to read over the course of the school year.

21st Century Skills Supported by this School:

Creativity, Communication, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Lifelong Learning

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy:

Students are involved in reading about and communicating current global events. They are kept aware of what is going on around the world and not just in their lives. They are taught how to use computers and how to be great digital citizens. One eighth grade math project provides real life experience as students are given a scenario to explore with a job, income, and real life expenses that they work through to learn how to budget and relate to the responsibilities of an independent life.

Promotion of Creativity in the Classroom for Students and Teachers:

Students are taught to be self-directed learners through literacy. The students are given a choice in the subject of their literature. Input is sought from the students by their teachers and through surveys to determine what interests the students most. Teachers are encouraged and supported in choosing areas to work on within their classrooms. The teachers also meet to collaborate with each other.
